Navigating Rensselaer & Beyond

Navigating Rensselaer & Beyond changes lives and opens new vistas to interests, possibilities, and connections.

NRB Week
Saturday, August 26 – Wednesday, August 30

Navigating Rensselaer & Beyond (NRB) is the official continuation of your orientation program that includes adventure/team building activities, historical/cultural programs, and community service opportunities all designed to help students get to know one another. One of the goals of NRB is to assist all incoming students in connecting with classmates while participating in interest-based activities. Another is to familiarize our new members of the Rensselaer community with not only the campus but also the city of Troy and surrounding areas.

For the whole day on Sunday you will be pre-registered into a Day Trip activity according to your interests. Beginning Monday, we move to a more typical campus atmosphere where you and your new friends will decide what you would like to participate in. All first-year students are expected to attend these programs.

For details on programs offered in previous years, please read below.

Activities include hikes through the Tongue Mountain Range, an Adirondack nature scavenger hunt, a live rattlesnake demonstration and canoeing, kayaking and swiming. You will get to experience all of this while learning environmental and scientific skills such as the basic practices of limnology (fresh water science) and aquatic species identification, as well as training in the use of lab instruments.

Lodging accommodations have been arranged in the newly renovated Education Center, which was originally an Adirondack lodge built in 1896. The newly renovated center offers the warmth of a beautiful Adirondack décor, a large modern kitchen, and recreation room with full computer media capabilities. The communal nature of your stay at the Darrin Fresh Water Institute will foster long-lasting skills, friendships, and experiences. A detailed packing list will be emailed to all confirmed participants.
