Transfer Student Orientation

Epic journeys begin at Rensselaer; to the innovators, scientists, artists and creators: welcome.

We are delighted that you are joining the Rensselaer community and look forward to meeting you at Student Orientation (SO). We have been working hard to put together a program that you will find useful and enjoyable. SO marks the beginning of your new membership into the RPI community and is an opportunity for you to gain tools to ensure a smooth transition into Rensselaer. Our hope is that you come to Orientation with a lot of questions about your new life and leave having them all answered. As you begin to finalize your own plans please do not hesitate to call the Orientation Office at (518) 276-8632 or e-mail us with any questions you have. Get excited, your Rensselaer experience is about to begin!

*The Student Orientation registration option will be available to you on your SIS account approximately 5-7 days after you submit your enrollment deposit. Logging in will require you to know your Rensselaer Identification Number (RIN). Use your RIN as the USER ID and for your first log-in, use your birthdate (MMDDYY format). 

Orientation Check-in

9 – 9:45 a.m.
Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies, lobby (Building #74)

On the morning of Orientation, please plan to arrive at the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies to check-in. When you arrive you will have an opportunity to review your schedule of events and take advantage of the light refreshments before the first program begins at 9:45 a.m. Lunch and refreshments through the day are included for students. You should plan to participate in Student Orientation for the entire day and to be in attendance until approximately 5:00 p.m.

Parents & Families

Parents and family members are welcome to join their students throughout the transfer orientation program. Parents check-in with their student and may opt to purchase a meal pass for a fee. Parents must register to attend the program by completing the guest information on their student’s online reservation form.  Although all family members are welcome, we ask that you please consider carefully your choice to bring very young siblings as a separate sibling program is not offered.

Topics covered during SO

SO is set up as a series of highly structured programs that cover numerous topics of concern to new students. During SO you will have the opportunity to meet new classmates, interact with faculty and student leaders, and become familiar with campus facilities.

Please plan to spend the day with us at Student Orientation. Your program will cover the following:

  • welcome sessions
  • transitioning to Rensselaer successfully
  • credit evaluation (for transfer students)
  • academic overview and advising
  • course registration
  • planning your future
  • health services
  • Rensselaer IDs
  • parking
  • tours of campus
  • resource center
  • meeting with a Class Dean

A detailed schedule will be distributed at check-in when you arrive on campus.

Student Health Center

There are four health center requirements for all new students; this information needs to be completed online prior to registering for classes.  Please, follow this link to connect to the student health portal. Disability student services

Please notify Disabled Disability Services for Students at (518) 276-8197 and the Student Orientation Office at (518) 276-8632 of any special needs you may have, if you have not already done so. This will ensure that we are prepared to assist you to have a productive and enjoyable stay on campus.

Tuition and financial aid

Questions regarding Rensselaer billing and payments may be directed to the Bursar’s Office at (518) 276-6610. Questions regarding financial aid may be directed to the Financial Aid Office at (518) 276-6813.

Transfer student orientation fee

The charge for Transfer Student Orientation is $175. This fee will appear on your student account bill – please do not send money now.
