We are delighted that you are joining the Rensselaer community and look forward to meeting you at Student Orientation (SO). We have been working hard to put together a program that you will find useful and enjoyable. SO marks the beginning of your new membership into the RPI community and is an opportunity for you to gain tools to ensure a smooth transition into Rensselaer. Our hope is that you come to Orientation with a lot of questions about your new life and leave having them all answered. Important Orientation Dates
Transfer Student Orientation
August 26, 2019
*Participation in orientation programming is mandatory. Please bring a laptop or other electronic device for advisement and registration.
9:00 a.m–9:45 a.m.
Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies, Lobby (Building #74)
On the morning of Orientation, please plan to arrive at the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies to check-in. When you arrive you will have an opportunity to review your schedule of events and take advantage of the light refreshments before the first program begins at 9:45 a.m. Lunch and refreshments through the day are included for students. You should plan to participate in Student Orientation for the entire day and to be in attendance until approximately 5:00 p.m.
Parents & Families
Parents and family members are welcome to join their students throughout the transfer orientation program. Parents check-in with their student and may opt to purchase a meal pass for a fee. Parents must register to attend the program by completing the guest information on their student’s online reservation form. Although all family members are welcome, we ask that you please consider carefully your choice to bring very young siblings as a separate sibling program is not offered.
Topics covered during SO
SO is set up as a series of highly structured programs that cover numerous topics of concern to new students. During SO you will have the opportunity to meet new classmates, interact with faculty and student leaders, and become familiar with campus facilities.
Please plan to spend the day with us at Student Orientation. Your program will cover the following:
- welcome sessions
- transitioning to Rensselaer successfully
- credit evaluation (for transfer students)
- academic overview and advising
- planning your future
- health services
- Rensselaer IDs
- tours of campus
- resource center
- meeting with a Class Dean
A detailed schedule will be distributed at check-in when you arrive on campus.
Disability Services for Students
Please notify Disability Services for Students at (518) 276-8197 and the Student Orientation Office at (518) 276-8632 of any special needs you may have, if you have not already done so. This will ensure that we are prepared to assist you so you can have a productive and enjoyable stay on campus.
Transfer students may move in on Monday, August 27 between 10 a.m. and midnight. Check-in will be in the Student Living & Learning Office. For check-in, you will need your Rensselaer ID/a photo ID. As there is a one year residency requirement for Transfer students, if you have not already signed up for housing, please contact the Office of Student Living and Learning to arrange housing at (518) 276-6284, or e-mail email@example.com with any questions about on-campus accommodations.
Preparation for advisement
Prior to attending Student Orientation, please review the Rensselaer Catalog and Class Hour Schedule online at http://sis.rpi.edu. You will receive more specific information during your advising session but this will allow you to see which classes are offered ahead of time.
Student Health Center
Please send in the paper immunization form that your physician’s office completes and signs. Please also visit our website to complete the four forms via the Online Health Portal. (http://studenthealth.rpi.edu/, click on the “new student” tab). All full-time students must have health insurance that will provide on-going, routine care in Troy, NY. To meet this requirement you must either enroll in, or waive out of (with comparable insurance) the RPI health insurance plan. Enroll or waive via the Online Health Portal (deadline is September 15). AlcoholEdu and Haven are mandatory on-line education courses, which will open on July 31, 2018. Part 1 needs to be completed as soon as possible. Part 2 must be completed 45 days after classes begin.
Transfer student orientation fee
The charge for Transfer Student Orientation is $175. This fee will appear on your student account bill – please do not send money now.
